Prayers

A TIME OF PRAYER AND REFLECTION

IN A TIME OF EPIDEMIC

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Isaiah 49:8-11

This is what the Lord says:

‘In the time of my favour I will answer you,
    and in the day of salvation I will help you;
I will keep you and will make you
    to be a covenant for the people,
to restore the land
    and to reassign its desolate inheritances,
to say to the captives, “Come out,”
    and to those in darkness, “Be free!”

‘They will feed beside the roads
    and find pasture on every barren hill.
They will neither hunger nor thirst,
    nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them.
He who has compassion on them will guide them
    and lead them beside springs of water.
I will turn all my mountains into roads,
    and my highways will be raised up.
See, they will come from afar –
    some from the north, some from the west,
    some from the region of Aswan.’

Shout for joy, you heavens;
    rejoice, you earth;
    burst into song, you mountains!
For the Lord comforts his people
    and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.

But Zion said, ‘The Lord has forsaken me,
    the Lord has forgotten me.’

‘Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
    and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget,
    I will not forget you!

The Word of the Lord.

Psalm 120 (121)

Response: My help shall come from the Lord

I shall lift my eyes to the hills:

  where is my help to come from?

My help will come from the Lord,

  who made heaven and earth.                R/-

He will not let your foot slip:

  he will not doze, your guardian.

Behold, he will not doze or sleep,

  the guardian of Israel.          R/-

The Lord is your guardian, the Lord is your shade;

  he is at your right hand.

By day the sun will not strike you;

  nor the moon by night.                  R/-

The Lord will guard you from all harm;

  the Lord will guard your life.

The Lord will guard your coming and your going

  both now and for ever.                  R/-

Luke 12:22-32

Then Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: they do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[a]? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

‘Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labour or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you – you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.

Prayer for those in positions of authority

Loving God, in Christ Jesus, the servant of all,

you call us to the service of others.

Grant to those who govern the community

the skill to recognise its urgent needs

and the strength to pursue the common good.

Endow us all with patience and courage,

that we may care for the suffering, feed the hungry,

shelter the homeless, and sustain the needy.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Health Care Workers

Wondrous God, author of life,

you fashioned us in your likeness

and breathed into us the life which is your own.

Be with those whose special care is

the health of mind and body.

Fill their hearts with awe for the life which is your gift

and sustain them daily in your service,

that their hands may bring to others

the comfort of your healing touch.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for all those Affected

Merciful God, come to the help of your people.

Be our shelter in this time of struggle

and strengthen the bonds of our immediate family

our Parish Family, and community.

Bring healing to all who suffer the pains of illness,

assist those called upon to care for them,

and help us all to work to bring an end to this affliction. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Invocation of Our Lady

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,

that never was it known that anyone who

asked your help, or sought your intercession

was left unaided.

Inspired with this confidence,

we come to you, O Virgin of virgins,

Mother of our Saviour and our Mother.

We ask you to hear our requests

and in your loving compassion

to bring them to your and our ever loving Father God.

Hail Mary . . .

Our Father

May the Lord give us his protection and keep us all safe:

may he bless us and all who belong to us,

the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen
